Picking from his catalogue spanning over sixty years with 35+ albums to his name, he shows no signs of stopping. Age has caught up with Bruce a bit – back and hands not cooperating due to wear and tear and arthritis. Cdhanging fingerings and tunings Bruce is able to play songs that were once thought to be never played again. His guitar chops have diminished but the lyrics and his voice is as strong as ever.

It’s been over twenty years and countless shows that I’ve seen Bruce play. This one was special; I’ve learned to not take shows like this for granted because you never know. This could be the last Bruce Cockburn show, you never know. Sounds like a dire prediction but one can’t help but think that. WIth that said, I sat in the front row soaking it in and appreciating the music and inspiration that Bruce has provided me over the years.

“Time takes its toll but in my soul I’m on a roll”

Bruce drew heavily from his most recent release, “O Sun, O Moon”. Songs like “Push Comes to Shove”, “Us All” and what I feel is his motto of today, “On a Roll”. There were some deep cuts like “Red Brother, Red Sister” and “Stolen Land”. The fan favorites “Wondering Where the Lions are”, “Call it Democracy and “Pacing the Cage” made there presence known as well.

Two plus hours of time well spent. My cup is full and feel revitalized. Seeing Bruce and live music in general always does that for me. Is it my last Bruce Cockburn concert? Maybe but I wouldn’t bet on it because he’sl is still on a roll.

Bruce Cockburn Concert Setlist: March14, 2026

1st Set:

Cafe Society

Trouble with Normal

When you give it away

King of the Bolero

Push Comes To Shove

Red Brother Red Sister

On a Roll

Waiting For a Miracle

2nd Set:

Last Night of the World

3 Al Purdy’s

Understanding Nothing

Call it Democracy

Stolen Land

Lovers in a Dangerous Time

Wondering Where the Lions Are

When You Arrive

Tie Me At the Crossroads

Encore

Pacing The Cage

Us All

The post Bruce Cockburn: March 14, Colorado Springs first appeared on Guitar Musings.

How Can I Lose Myself?

Larry

Concerts

Misc Rants

Practicing

guitar

letting go

performaing

Can’t Remember? I’m hindering my ability to play to my full potential.

Let the Music/Life Guide You:

A dear friend of mine Robin Easton (blog here), recently wrote a post suggesting that we should trust our hearts and trust life to teach us in life. This can be applied to our playing as well. Trust our experience, our training and our hearts when we play. Play for yourself and let your heart and music guide you into a great performance. Note, that doesn’t mean that every note will be perfect,it might even be a bit sloppy but some of the best performances that I have ever witnessed weren’t technically great but the passion; the emotion was there. The musician let go and let the music guide him/her into something that I felt privileged to watch. This I suggest to you sounds scary to even me because this requires an act of faith and to embrace the unknown and dare I say relinquishing control. But the idea of control is a myth because we can’t control things like if the PA goes out or if a crying baby is in the audience, etc… Giving in and letting go of the control is probably the biggest act of control that you will do.

Like that old cliche’ I’ve heard over the years: “Play like no one is listening.”

*Note: Thank you Robin for inspiring this post!
The post How Can I Lose Myself? first appeared on Guitar Musings.

Guitar Superstar Musings

Hercules Castro

Concerts

Misc Rants

contest

guitar

guitar super star

Hercules

Hola music fans, So everyone keeps asking me how the Guitar Contest went. In a nutshell, it was mixed. I did everything exactly the way I wanted to. I made some contacts, met some stars, I turned in a performance that the crowd got into, and I distributed over 600 copies of my CD to guitar fans. The one bad part was that while the judges all agreed that I had the chops (“I’d have to practice for 100 years to get those kind of chops” – Earl Slick) , they weren’t quite ready for the intensity. Their critiques sounded like something my parents would have said (which I’m actually OK with, rock and roll ain’t for the parents).

So needless to say I didn’t win the contest. But I accomplished what I set out to do and made a splash. To quote the editor of Guitar Player Magazine – “Yours will be the most watched video from the contest once we post them on Youtube.”

Here’s a video my wife shot of my performance.

For the record –

Judges:

Earl Slick (David Bowie guitarist)

Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson guitarist)

Elliot Easton (The Cars guitarist)

Steve Lukather (Toto guitarist)

Greg Hampton (producer, Alice Cooper, Lita Ford)

Host:

Brendon Small (Creator of Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse and Home Movies)

Prizes:

A bunch of gear and a magazine profile, no contracts or studio time

LInks

Hercules Guitar Superstar Vid
Unedited version of the performance (contains offensive language)
The post Guitar Superstar Musings first appeared on Guitar Musings.

Hercules Castro: Guitar Player Superstar?

Larry

Concerts

inspiration

Music Recommendations

Concert

guitar

Joe Satriani

news

performing

Below is a press release that I received from my good friend and Guitar Musings…
The post Hercules Castro: Guitar Player Superstar? first appeared on Guitar Musings.

Below is a press release that I received from my good friend and Guitar Musings contributor, Hercules Castro. It was just him and the music; perfect!

Links:

Dougie’s Home Page

Moon Guitars

Dougie’s signature guitar

Get Dougie’s Music<img decoding="async" style="margin: 0px; Still not sure which one it was but CD 2 was in my face and Tommy got a little bit of help from Bob Littell on Harmonica.

Highlights:

The mix: I know I said this in the last post but it’s so good and really makes the CD’s an experience to listen to.
Working Man’s Blues: Good old fashioned blues with Littell on the harmonica. They played off each other well and had a nice little jam going at one point. I’m not a huge fan of the harmonica but this was truly impressive.
Morning Aire: Beautiful song. I don’t know if there is more I can say.
Initiation: Tommy Does a long version of this where he’s really working the delay but in the end there’s a point where you could tell he just releases and lets the music take over. “Primal Guitar” as Michael Hedges used to say.
Questions: Last track on the CD and all I would write down in my notes was, “Wow!”

Any “lowlights?” For me, I would say too much harmonica. The first four tracks felt like they were Tommy featuring Littell. There was great guitar in those tracks but the harmonica seemed to butt in like a third wheel at times. My thoughts were, “I bought this CD for Tommy Emmanuel, not the harmonica.” As I said before, I’m not the biggest fan of the instrument. Great playing and I have a great respect for Littell’s playing but it was too much for me.

Final Thought:

Once again, if you don’t have it get it! is the introduction on the first track on Tommy Emmanuel’s “Live, Center Stage” CD1. Was that a prediction or a warning? Either way, Tommy didn’t disappoint with his 2nd live double CD set in three years.

Highlights:

The Mix: Every song on CD1 was engineered to perfection. From Tommy’s playing to the just the right mix of crow noise makes you feel like your there at times.
Nine Pound Hammer: Great improv solo much like Guitar Boogie. At one point, Tommy is playing guitar with one hand a moving baseline on the other. Oh yeah, he’s singing on top of all that.
And So it Goes: Beautiful arrangement of a timeless Billy Joel song. This performance just might bring a tear to ones eye.
I Go to Rio: Just love that he plays this. It’s partially because I performed this in Jr. High choir and he does an awesome job with it.
Beatles Medley: Not the best one that I’ve heard but it’s still worth mentioning. He does like to mix it up so this version had “Here Comes the Sun”, “When I’m Sixty Four”, “Day Tripper” information regarding the circumstances surrounding Bruce’s performance. Apparently, Bruce’s normal stage crew wasn’t there to set his rig and so there was a bunch of “fiddling” around trying to figure out what was wrong and Bruce’s in ear monitor was also on the fritz. Plus, with the long delay Bruce had to keep focused because there was a curfew and if they went over that curfew, there would be fines. Therefore the reason why Bruce wasn’t engaging the audience like I mentions. Anyway, thanks to Audrey for shedding some light on the situation and knowing what I know now, I’m even more grateful for Bruce’s performance. He could have thrown in the towel and just showed up but he still played a great show. THANKS Bruce!
The post Bruce Cockburn in Denver: Follow up first appeared on Guitar Musings.

Tommy Emmanuel Live! margin: 0px !important;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=guitmusi-20&l=ur2&o=1" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" /> was the last to play. We had quite a long wait after Nanci Griffith’s set, probably about 45 minutes. Good thing the emcee’s Harry Tuft, Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore had quite a few songs in the repertoire to keep us entertained. But we were ready for Bruce and he was finally on stage, just him 3 guitars and a mic.

The show started off a bit tough because the mix was a bit hot and Bruce even mentioned it and asked for the mix to be turned down a bit. A few songs in, the mix was pretty much dialed in and we were on our way. As always Bruce’s playing was spot on and that thumb never quits. Had some great solos on “Stolen Land” and “If a Tree Falls” and surprised me with “Kit Carson” and “Trouble with Normal. Ended the night with “Rouler sa Bosse” and “Tie Me at the Crossroads.”

Great show by Bruce, one of the better shows that I have seen him do. The only thing that was different about Bruce, this time was that he didn’t really converse with the crowd all that much. He would respond to some of the comments the audience made but wouldn’t offer anything on his own like he usually does. So sometimes there was an awkward silence when he was tuning or switching guitars. Maybe because of the long delay before he went on, bad day, etc… Who knows? Either way, his performance was awesome and he never fails to deliver.

Set List

Last Night of the World

See You Tomorrow

Lovers in a Dangerous Time

Pacing the Cage (wow!)

Trouble With Normal

Stolen Land

Kit Carson

Put it in Your Heart

If a Tree Falls

Wondering Where the Lions Are

Encore:

Rouler Sa Boss

Tie Me at the Crossroads

Other Bruce Cockburn Concerts I have reviewed:

7.22.03 Boulder Theatre – d by Harry Tuft(Swallow Hill Founder), Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore. Between each set they would perform one or two classic fold song to help pass the time. I was really impressed by the guitar playing of Tuft and Moore, they both played together but it seemed as if it was one instrument. The collaboration of their guitars were inspiring. Moore was the nice surprise with his blues fingerstyle licks all over the fingerboard. He more than once got the crowd going with his playing.

Other Acts:

Souther Journey, featuring Emily Morgan Bates and Marta Burton:

Morgan Bate’s voice filled the hall with her voice with old time southern spirituals like “Wade in the Water.” It was a great start to a wonderful evening.

Fifth World:

Mix Australian didgeridoo playing with Native American flute and rhythm, you have Fifth World. First time I ever heard them and I’m getting their CD now. The rhythms of the didgeridoo and the calmness of the flute was intoxicating and I wanted more. If you like good mood music with a cosmic feel, check them out.

Santa Cruz River Band

A three piece band from Arizona playing traditional Mexican music with the and Arizona flair. Tight rhythms and perfect harmonies during their set and thy topped it off playing one of my favorites, “Volver, Volver.” I’m a sentimental fool, that song reminds me of my grandma.

Dakota Blonde

Yet another first time listen and I will definitely get their CD.  There were so many things I could go on about them but what got my attention was the mandolin play of Ernie Martinez.  Worthy to note was their rendition of Men at Work’s “Man Down Under.”  I Highly recommend a listen<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" border="0" width="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=mvt-20&l=ur2&o=1" height="1" style="margin: 0px;
